Complementary influences
Anglet,
Angelu the Basque, far from relegating its share of
Gascon culture to a bit part, makes a point of defending its importance.
It remains the ideal
base camp from which to explore the
authenticity of the Basque Country embodied by its close and more distant neighbours:
Bayonne,
Biarritz,
Saint-Jean-de-Luz,
Sare,
Ascain or
Espelette.
Can you quote the famous
Basque triology of the
inland villages?
In every one, you will find a
church, a
square and a
fronton.
The further inland you go, leaving
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port,
the mountain passes of Cize et and the
Iraty forest behind you, the more you will see the influence of the Béarn. The villages of
Haute-Soule,
Larrau, Sainte-Engrâce will make their appearance, heralding the mountains of the Pyrenees.
