Few people have ever heard of Anglet?s saltworks, and most don?t even know where they were.
In fact, there weren't several, but just one, which is nothing like Briscous (around ten) or Urcuit (80).
But above all, and much less frequently in Aquitaine, there was a rock salt mine in Anglet, operational for 48 years, from 1890 to 1938.
The mine was certainly not the size of those in Lorraine or Poland, but it employed up to 18 workers, most of them underground miners, and its salt was, despite its modest size, marketed throughout the region and even as far away as Loire-Inférieure!
Our lecturer Michel Rapin, a geophysicist, will take you on a journey through this epic story, based on rare but precious archives that bear witness to a fascinating human adventure, intimately linked to Anglet?s industrial heritage.
