The sacred mountain

Located near Urrugne, Sare, Ascain and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, La Rhune is the sacred mountain of the Basque Country. Home to dolmens and cromlechs, this emblematic mountain marks the border between Spain and France, as well as the traditional territories of Labourd and Navarre.

Climbing La Rhune on foot is a well-established custom, offering total immersion in Basque nature. The ascent, generally completed in 1 or 2 hours, is facilitated by signposted paths, ideal for lovers of walking and authentic landscapes.

A picturesque journey

For a gentler climb, the famous Petit Train de La Rhune offers a charming alternative. In service since 1924, this cogwheel train carries around 350,000 visitors a year from February to November, departing from the small Col de Saint-Ignace station. At a speed of 8 km/h, you can fully appreciate the scenery as you climb to an altitude of 905 metres. Along the way, you’ll come across pottoks, sheep and cows, while admiring a sumptuous panorama of the coast and the Pyrenees.

At the summit, you’ll be greeted by two ventas offering tapas, drinks and souvenirs, adding a friendly touch to your experience. Don’t miss this unique adventure, a highlight of your stay in the Basque Country!
