Basque prehistory

The caves of Sare, nestled in the Atxurio mountain range, are an impressive limestone massif. One of these caves, called Leza, has remained virtually untouched for 2 million years. The cave, with its vast spaces and one of the largest entrance porches in Aquitaine, reveals traces of the daily life of our ancestors. A 900-metre trail, enhanced by sound and light, offers a unique immersive experience.

The 45-minute guided tour reveals the site’s geological features, its role as a habitat for 10,000 years, its mythology and the origins of the Basque people.

A journey to the heart of Basque history and culture

The Sare caves are complemented by a museum where you can learn more about the evolution of man and discover the work of J.M. Barandiaran, the eminent Basque prehistorian. To extend your adventure, visit seven other remarkable caves in the Basque Country: Arrikrutz, Mendukilo, Pozalagua, Ikaburu, Zugarramurdi (the Witches’ Cave), Ekainberri, Koben Koba, as well as the Centre d’interprétation de l’art rupestre in Karrantza.

Let yourself be tempted by this fascinating exploration and plunge into the mysteries of the Basque depths.
