Located in the Blancpignon district, the Forêt du Lazaret, classified as a Sensitive Natural Area, is a place to discover biodiversity. Stretching over 10 hectares along the banks of the Adour, it offers a magnificent view of the spires of Bayonne Cathedral.
Today, the forest is a popular leisure area, with footpaths, a green cycling path, picnic areas and relaxation areas on the banks of the Adour. Birdwatching and flora discovery will delight nature lovers.
Like the Forêt du Pignada, the Lazaret was planted by man. Maritime pines were planted here as early as the 17th century to stabilize the dune, channel the Adour and protect its new mouth at La Barre, rerouted in 1578 by architect Louis de Foix under Henri III. In the 20th century, it took its name from a now-defunct hospital for quarantined sailors.
