Sand sports
When the beach becomes a playground!
While lounging and swimming are the most popular activities on our beaches, they are also unsuspected playgrounds for a variety of free-form disciplines.
A veritable beach culture with virtually unlimited potential for local and visiting sports enthusiasts, highlighted by numerous events.

Beach volleyball
With 8 official fields available all year round, the Sables d’Or beach offers a unique configuration in France. Many of these fields are open-access, so all you need is your ball.
This beach sport par excellence is played by teams of 2 or 3 players. The advantage here is that the sand will cushion your best dives!
Anglet hosts major events during the summer, including the Anglet Beach Challenge and the Anglet Federal Open Beach Volley tournament.
Ultimate frisbee
The “disc” of your vacation could well be a Frisbee. If the object is a staple of beach games, the local association Euskadisk offers to take it to the next level by joining the training sessions it organizes from mid-June on Corsaires beach.
A chance to discover the rules and values of this mixed sport played without referees by two teams of 7 players (reduced to 5 players on the sand).
Are you flying high?

Beach rugby
As the region’s leading sport, rugby has naturally found its place on the beach, offering an ideal natural alternative to grass.
Unlike the parent discipline, matches are played by teams of 5 against 5. A sign of the undeniable popularity of the sport, the Anglet Beach Rugby Festival celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2022.
Soft ball
This adapted version of baseball is played on a smaller pitch and with much softer balls (hence the name).
The local Gambas club is organizing the Soft des Plages tournament on the Madrague beach in August, with an original concept combining matches and music. A batting cage will enable everyone to discover the discipline, while a “homerun” competition will be held with the hitters from each team.

Beach flag
Straight from Australia, Beach Flag is one of the six disciplines of inshore lifesaving, and can be likened to a game of musical chairs.
Participants lie flat on their stomachs in rows on the sand, with their backs to the sticks planted 20 meters away. There is one less stick than participants. At the signal, competitors stand up, turn around and sprint for one of the sticks. Anyone left without a stick is eliminated.
It’s the perfect way to work on reactivity, explosiveness and coordination. Les Guides de Bains Angloys, whose ranks include a two-time Beach Flag world champion, offers introductory courses in coastal lifesaving disciplines.
