Chocolate Xocoalt

Museums educate, inspire, take you on journeys, nourish the mind and, sometimes, the body!
The Basque Coast invites you to discover an unexpected part of its history and tradition: chocolate. The history of chocolate began with the Basque sailors who set sail for the Americas. It was a ritual drink in pre-Columbian civilizations, known as Xocoalt, a symbol of abundance and fertility.

In the 17th century, Jewish communities fleeing the Inquisition settled in the Basque Country, bringing with them the recipe for making chocolate. The Basque Country quickly made a name for itself by producing strong, intense chocolate, becoming a major player in the field.

Gourmet immersion

The Atelier du Chocolat in Bayonne is dedicated to this universe. It invites you to discover cocoa, from its origins to your palate, via its transformation in the chocolate factory. The visit ends with a visit to the boutique, where you’ll be offered subtle or original chocolates, such as chocolate with Espelette chilli pepper.

Immerse yourself in this unique sensory experience and let yourself be seduced by the richness of Basque chocolate.
