A landless shepherd in Anglet

Do you know Ramuntxo Clausell, the last landless shepherd in Anglet? He perpetuates this ancestral tradition with his children, Oihan and Naia. Under the watchful eye of his faithful guardians, Luna (border collie), Lilou (Basque shepherd) and Bella (Pyrenean mastiff), Ramuntxo uses eco-pasturing to maintain the grounds of private individuals and professionals along the Basque coastline. His herd includes black-headed manech ewes, xaxi ardi, Pyrenean goats, donkeys and pottok.

In winter, he looks after this little world in his demountable sheepfold in the Maignon district of Anglet. He also hopes one day to launch his own ewe’s milk cheese, a dream he shares with Oihan. To be continued!

Eco-pasture and biodiversity: A positive impact

“The arrival of Ramuntxo’s ewes has had a beneficial effect on biodiversity. Thanks to eco-pasturing, birds are returning to our land. The animals’ excrement enriches the soil, encourages insects and attracts birds. This ecological maintenance method replaces tractors and diesel, in harmony with the spirit of the Jardins du Refuge” says Thierry Bandiera, head of general services for the Servantes de Marie congregation.

Meet Ramuntxo at the Olentzero ritual

You can also meet Ramuntxo and his animals at the Olentzero Basque ritual in December, organized by Kimua Ikastola. Alongside horsemen, Angeluarrak dancers, Ibaialde singers and hundreds of Angloy children dressed in traditional costumes, Ramuntxo takes part in this emblematic festival.
