Golf de Chiberta, a key player in the preservation of local biodiversity

If the Chiberta course is a golfing jewel, its 80 hectares are also an ecological marvel. “It’s a veritable safety corridor for wildlife,” observes Patxi Ithurry, director of Golf de Chiberta, who has been working here for a dozen years. Some birds come here to nest, while others have even made it their home, such as woodpeckers and sedentary goshawks. A pair of foxes have made it their playground, as have the roe deer that sometimes roam the course. “Fortunately, we don’t have any wild boar,” he enthuses.
To these species we can add the fish and amphibians that inhabit the lake. A body of water that plays a major role in regulating the neighborhood. In the past, adjacent streets were often flooded. To solve this problem, the management, in collaboration with city services, installed a pumping station. “We didn’t wait for the drought of 2022 to work on virtuous systems,” says the man who has been anticipating the effects of climate change for several years. The installation of sensors and rigorous monitoring of water levels and quality, as well as the protection of biodiversity, are just some of the many initiatives that have earned the Golf pour la Biodiversité Silver Label from the French Golf Federation.
